Elisabetta Belloni Resigns as Director of Italy's DIS on January 15, No New Role
Jan 6, 2025, 10:03 AM
Elisabetta Belloni, aged 66, the director of Italy's Department of Security Information (DIS), has announced her resignation effective January 15, 2025. Belloni, who was appointed by former Premier Mario Draghi in May 2021, confirmed her decision to leave the position before her term was set to expire in May. She communicated her choice to Alfredo Mantovano, the Delegated Authority for the Security of the Republic. Belloni, known for her long career in diplomacy, has denied any connection between her departure and the assumption of a new role, specifically refuting rumors of a position in the European Union alongside Ursula von der Leyen. She stated that she has no other roles lined up. Her decision to step down was reportedly communicated to Premier Giorgia Meloni on December 23, 2024, with a request to delay the announcement until after the holidays. Belloni's tenure at DIS followed her role as Italy's sherpa for the G7 and G20, which concluded at the end of 2024.
