ECI Mandates AI-Generated Campaign Content Labeling for Delhi Elections Amid Misinformation Concerns
Jan 16, 2025, 08:30 AM
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued an advisory to political parties to ensure responsible and transparent use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in campaigning for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The advisory mandates that any campaign materials, including images, videos, and audio, which are generated or significantly altered by AI technologies, must be clearly labeled with notations such as 'AI-Generated', 'Digitally Enhanced', or 'Synthetic Content'. This move aims to combat misinformation and promote accountability in the electoral process. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has previously expressed concerns over AI's potential to spread misinformation, especially through deep fakes, which could undermine trust in electoral processes. The advisory also requires political parties to include disclaimers during the dissemination of campaign advertisements or promotional content where synthetic content is utilized. The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8. This advisory follows guidelines issued during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for responsible and ethical use of social media platforms.
