IRS Launches 2025 Tax Season on January 27, Expands Direct File Program to 25 States

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the 2025 tax filing season will officially begin on January 27, with the agency starting to accept and process 2024 federal income tax returns on that date. The IRS anticipates receiving over 140 million tax returns by the federal filing deadline of April 15. This year, the IRS has introduced expanded tools and features to facilitate easier filing, including the Direct File program, now available in 25 states, which allows eligible taxpayers to file their federal returns for free. New features include a data import tool for W-2 information, live chat support in English and Spanish, and enhanced support for credits such as the Child and Dependent Care Credit. Additionally, the IRS Free File program is open for taxpayers earning $84,000 or less, enabling early preparation and filing, though returns will not be processed until January 27. The IRS encourages electronic filing and direct deposit for refunds to minimize wait times and errors, and advises taxpayers to use trusted tax preparers to avoid potential scams.
