Sophie Hediger, a 26-year-old Swiss snowboarder and member of the national snowboard cross team, died in an avalanche at the Arosa mountain resort in Switzerland. The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, as she was practicing off-piste. Hediger had previously competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and was preparing for the upcoming World Championships in March, where she aimed to win a medal. The Swiss-Ski federation confirmed her death on December 24, expressing condolences for the loss of the promising athlete.
