Yankees Acquire Two-Time All-Star Cody Bellinger from Cubs for $5 Million
Dec 17, 2024, 09:59 PM
The New York Yankees have acquired two-time All-Star outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs in a trade that also involves pitcher Cody Poteet moving to Chicago. The Cubs are sending $5 million to the Yankees as part of the deal to offset part of Bellinger's salary. Bellinger, a former National League MVP and son of former Yankee Clay Bellinger, is owed $27.5 million in 2025 under the first of two player options in his contract, with an additional $25 million player option for 2026 and a $5 million buyout. The 29-year-old Bellinger batted .266 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs in 130 games for the Cubs last season, despite a stint on the injured list due to a broken right rib. He drove in 33 runs in his last 39 games, following a strong 2023 performance where he hit .307 with 26 home runs and 97 RBIs. This trade marks a significant move for the Yankees as they continue to reshape their roster following the departure of Juan Soto.
