Over 1.3 Million in Puerto Rico Without Power Due to Massive Blackout Before New Year's Eve
Dec 31, 2024, 05:04 PM
A massive power outage early Tuesday has left nearly all of Puerto Rico without electricity as the island prepares for New Year's Eve celebrations. Luma Energy, the company that manages the U.S. territory's power grid, confirmed that approximately 90% of the island’s 1.47 million customers—over 1.3 million people—are without power. Officials stated that the blackout was caused by a failure in an underground power line and that it could take up to 24 to 48 hours to fully restore electricity. The outage comes amid a string of widespread power failures on the island, leaving residents uncertain about their New Year's plans.
