Chargers' Dicker Nails 57-Yard Fair-Catch Kick, First Since 1976, in 34-27 Win Over Broncos
Dec 20, 2024, 03:49 AM
Los Angeles Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker executed the first successful fair-catch kick in the NFL since 1976, converting a 57-yard field goal against the Denver Broncos right before halftime. This rare play, known as a fair-catch kick, allows a team to attempt a field goal from the spot of a fair catch without a snap, and with defenders positioned 10 yards away. The opportunity arose after a fair-catch interference penalty on the Broncos, committed by Tremon Smith, moved the ball to the Denver 47-yard line following a fair catch attempt by Derius Davis. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh, who had previously attempted this play, and special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken, who regularly practices it with the team, seized the moment. Dicker's kick not only marked a historic moment but also contributed to the Chargers' comeback, as they rallied to win 34-27. The last successful fair-catch kick before Dicker's was made by Ray Wersching of the then-San Diego Chargers in 1976.
