VisitNine Monkeys, Including Endangered Species, Die Mysteriously Over Two Days at Hong Kong's Oldest Zoo
Oct 15, 2024, 06:32 AM
Nine monkeys have died mysteriously over two days at Hong Kong's oldest zoo, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, prompting authorities to partially close the facility for disinfection and launch an urgent investigation. The deaths began on October 14, 2024, when eight monkeys were found dead, including three critically endangered Cotton-top Tamarins. On October 15, a ninth monkey, a White-faced Saki, also died. A De Brazza's Monkey was reported to be ill and is under veterinary care. Necropsies and laboratory tests are being conducted to determine the cause of the deaths. Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, stated that the problem must be contained and the cause uncovered as soon as possible. The mammals section of the zoo remains closed while authorities closely monitor the situation and observe any other animals displaying unusual behavior.
