Man Dies After Genetically Edited Pig Kidney Transplant at Mass General
May 11, 2024, 11:10 PM
Rick Slayman, the first person to receive a kidney transplant from a genetically edited pig, has passed away. The transplant was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in March, and Slayman was released from the hospital on April 3. The hospital stated that there is no indication his death was related to the transplant. Slayman had been on dialysis for years and received a human kidney transplant in 2018 that failed. His case has been seen as a beacon of hope for many transplant patients worldwide. His family expressed gratitude for the additional seven weeks they had with him, thanks to the transplant.
