Hezbollah Transfers Southern Lebanon Control to Army Under UN Resolution 1701 Ceasefire
Dec 4, 2024, 08:00 PM
The Lebanese government has announced that Hezbollah has agreed to transfer control of southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army. This development follows the terms of a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which came into effect a week ago and has been dangerously marred by violence. The ceasefire is based on United Nations Resolution 1701, established after the 2006 war, which mandates that the Lebanese army and UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) will be the only authorized armed forces south of the Litani River. The Pentagon has confirmed that the Lebanese army will secure the southern region following the withdrawal of Hezbollah forces.
