Syria's Caretaker Government to Hike Public Sector Salaries by 400% Next Month, Says Finance Minister Mohammed Abazeed
Jan 5, 2025, 03:21 PM
Syria's caretaker government has announced a 400% salary increase for many public sector employees, effective next month, following an administrative restructuring aimed at improving efficiency and accountability within the ministries. The finance minister, Mohammed Abazeed, stated that this move is the first step towards addressing the country's economic challenges. The salary hike, expected to cost approximately 1.65 trillion Syrian pounds per month, or about 127 million dollars at current rates, will be funded through the public treasury, regional aid, investments, and potentially by unfreezing Syrian assets held abroad. This month's salaries for public sector workers are scheduled to be disbursed on January 5th or 6th.
