The game, part of the historic Border Showdown, saw Missouri lead by as many as 24 points, although Kansas managed to close the gap to within two points late in the game. This victory marks Missouri's first win over a No. 1 team since defeating Kansas in February 1997, and it is the first time in 12 years that Missouri has won the Border Showdown. The loss is Kansas's second consecutive defeat, following a 13-point loss to Creighton, making them the fifth No. 1 team to lose two straight games to unranked opponents since Florida in December 2003.
