Man Survives Being Pushed Onto Subway Tracks on New Year's Eve; Suspect Charged

A 45-year-old man is in critical but stable condition after being pushed onto the subway tracks at the 18th Street station in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood on New Year's Eve. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., when the victim was shoved into the path of a southbound 1 train. He was struck by the train but miraculously survived with only a head injury. The suspect, initially described as wearing a black-hooded sweatshirt, black jacket, and grey pants, fled the scene. Hours later, police apprehended 23-year-old Kamel Hawkins near Columbus Circle. Hawkins has been charged with attempted murder and assault. Authorities report that Hawkins has a history of prior violent offenses, including assaulting a police officer in 2019 and weapons charges.
