Judy Garland's 'Wizard of Oz' Ruby Slippers Sell for Record $28 Million, 20 Years After Theft
Dec 7, 2024, 11:50 PM
A pair of iconic ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" have been sold at auction for a record $28 million, significantly exceeding their predicted price of $3 million. The slippers were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 2005 when Terry Jon Martin smashed the glass of the museum's door and display case with a hammer. After their whereabouts remained a mystery for years, the FBI recovered the slippers in 2018. The $28 million sale of the ruby slippers sets a new record for any worn item in Hollywood history.
