Israel's Shaldag Unit Conducts 'Operation Deep Layer' Raid on Iranian Missile Facility in Syria Targeting Hezbollah
Jan 1, 2025, 01:14 PM
Israel has officially taken responsibility for a covert commando raid conducted in September 2024 against an underground Iranian missile production facility near the city of Maysaf in Syria. The operation, named 'Operation Deep Layer,' was carried out by the elite Shaldag unit of the Israeli Air Force. The targeted facility, located approximately 200 kilometers from Israeli territory, was part of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC) and operated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). It was involved in producing precision-guided missiles intended as a supply for Hezbollah. The Israeli forces, after rappelling from helicopters, raided the facility, seized documents, and subsequently destroyed the underground section with explosives. The operation was deemed urgent to prevent the facility from reaching full production capacity, reflecting concerns over the potential mass production of missiles by Iran.
