Oct 20, 2024, 12:05 AM
At least seven people were killed and six others injured after the gangway of a ferry dock collapsed on Georgia's Sapelo Island on Saturday, according to authorities. The incident occurred during a Gullah-Geechee community event, plunging several attendees into the water. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Coast Guard are involved in search, rescue, and recovery efforts. Governor Brian Kemp has dispatched state resources to assist in the operation. Sapelo Island is home to a tiny Gullah-Geechee community of Black slave descendants.
