The Democratic Republic of Congo's army announced it has successfully thwarted an attempted coup in the capital, Kinshasa. The incident involved Congolese and foreign fighters, including three Americans and led by exiled politician Christian Malanga. The coup attempt targeted the residence of Vital Kamerhe, Deputy Prime Minister of Economy, and the Palace of the Nation. A shootout ensued, resulting in three deaths, including two guards and one attacker. The army has arrested several suspects, including foreigners, with a total of 50 people involved. Brig. Gen. Sylavin Ekenge, the army spokesperson, confirmed the arrests. The U.S. ambassador to Congo confirmed the involvement of American citizens but denied any official U.S. involvement.
