North Korea Launches New ICBM Capable of Reaching U.S., Sets Record 86-Minute Flight
Oct 30, 2024, 11:45 PM
North Korea has launched a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), possibly the Hwasong-18, setting new records in flight time and altitude. The missile was fired towards the East Sea on October 31, flew for 86 minutes, reached an altitude of 7,000 kilometers, and traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers before landing outside Japan's exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan. This is the longest flight time recorded for a North Korean missile to date. Japan's Defense Minister indicated that the missile's capabilities suggest it is a new type of ICBM capable of reaching the United States. North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, confirmed the test and stated it was a 'crucial' step in boosting the country's nuclear deterrent. The United States, South Korea, and Japan have condemned the launch, stating that North Korea's missile development threatens regional and international peace and stability. In response, South Korea has announced new sanctions against North Korea.
