Venezuela Passes Law with 25-30 Year Prison Terms for Supporting Sanctions

The Venezuelan National Assembly has passed a controversial law, the 'Law of Simón Bolívar,' which imposes severe penalties on individuals supporting international sanctions against the government of Nicolás Maduro. The law criminalizes actions such as promoting or endorsing sanctions, with penalties ranging from 25 to 30 years in prison. It also includes provisions for restrictions of up to 60 years for leaders promoting such measures. The legislation, approved unanimously, has been described as targeting opposition leaders, the press, and others perceived as undermining the government. It also codifies economic sanctions as crimes against humanity and allows for the confiscation of assets. President Nicolás Maduro has officially signed the law into effect, further solidifying its implementation.
