Kenya Floods: 93 Dead, 100K Families Affected, 4B Shillings for Repairs
Apr 29, 2024, 05:12 AM
Kenya is grappling with severe flooding that has resulted in significant casualties and widespread displacement. The floods have claimed at least 93 lives nationwide, with the death toll expected to rise. Over 100,000 families have been affected, with extensive evacuations from inundated villages. The government has allocated 4 billion shillings for immediate flood response and infrastructure repair, including roads and bridges severely damaged by the floods. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced the allocation, emphasizing the urgency of the response. Additionally, the floods have disrupted the education sector, prompting the postponement of school reopenings and recommendations for extended school holidays to ensure children's safety. More than 75 people have died from the floods, and some schools in flood-prone areas might remain closed longer. The floods have destroyed six major roads, and there is a warning that the Seven Forks Dams may overflow.
