Indonesia Joins BRICS as Full Member, Expanding Alliance to Nine New Members Under Brazil's 2025 Presidency
Jan 6, 2025, 03:50 PM
Brazil, currently holding the presidency of the BRICS alliance in 2025, has announced the formal accession of Indonesia as a full member. This decision was unanimously approved by the existing members during the Johannesburg Summit in August 2023. Indonesia's interest in joining was communicated after the formation of its new government following the 2024 presidential elections, with Prabowo Subianto assuming the presidency on October 20, 2024. The inclusion of Indonesia, which has the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, aligns with the group's goals of supporting global governance reform and enhancing South-South cooperation, priorities set by Brazil during its 2025 presidency. This expansion sees the addition of nine new members to the alliance.
