VisitIndia to Add 15.4GW Coal Power Capacity Amid Sharp Demand Surge
Jun 19, 2024, 06:41 AM
India is set to see a sharp jump in coal-fired electricity capacity this year, as the country rushes to add generation to cope with surging power demand, sources say. The world's most populous nation expects to add 15.4 gigawatts of new coal power capacity in the year through March 2025. This addition marks the highest increase in almost a decade. The rapid economic growth in India has prolonged its reliance on coal, which is raising concerns about the impact on Big Tech's net-zero pledges, given that India's electricity is predominantly coal-based and has one of the most carbon-intensive grids in the world.
