VisitGreek-Owned, Liberian-Flagged MV Tutor Sinks After Houthi Attack, Killing Filipino Sailor
Jun 19, 2024, 07:43 PM
The Greek-owned, Liberian-flagged bulk carrier MV Tutor has sunk in the Red Sea following an attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The vessel, which was carrying 80,000 tons of coal, was struck by uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and missiles on June 12. The attack resulted in significant damage, including flooding in the engine room and further damage to the portside. One Filipino sailor was killed in the initial drone strike. The ship eventually sank on June 18, 27km off Eritrea, leaving a 20km oil slick. This incident, confirmed by UKMTO, marks the second ship sunk by the Houthis in their ongoing campaign, raising concerns about the safety of international shipping lanes in the region, particularly those linked to Israel.
