Hong Kong Police Detain Artist Sanmu Chan on Eve of 35th Tiananmen Anniversary
Jun 4, 2024, 01:19 AM
On the eve of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, Hong Kong police detained artist Sanmu Chan in Causeway Bay. Chan, also known as Chen Shisen, was surrounded by over 30 police officers after he made gestures symbolizing '8964'—a reference to the date of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Chan, who was wearing a white shirt, was taken into a police van, but it remains unclear if he was formally arrested. Sources later indicated that he was released. This incident occurred amid heavy police deployment in the area, with officers patrolling in small groups around Victoria Park. The anniversary also saw a patriotic carnival taking place in Victoria Park, where another young man was questioned and taken away to a temporary police stand.
