Iran-Backed Militias Launch Rocket Attack on U.S. Base in Iraq, Causing Minor Damage and No Casualties
Aug 5, 2024, 06:58 PM
The Ain al-Assad airbase in Iraq, which houses U.S. troops, was targeted by a rocket attack on August 5, 2024. Reports indicate that at least two rockets were fired by Iran-backed militias, causing minor damage and no casualties. The rockets were identified as Iranian-made Arash-1 122mm rockets. The attack is believed to be in retaliation for the recent U.S. airstrike that killed Abu Hassan al-Maliki, a commander in the Popular Mobilization Forces. The rockets damaged a fuel depot, and the C-RAM anti-aircraft gun system was used to repel the attack. The U.S. forces are on high alert in their bases in Syria following the attack.
