San Francisco Implements Policy Barring Police Pretext Stops Today
Jul 18, 2024, 03:00 PM
San Francisco has implemented a new policy that restricts police from using pretext stops, effective today, despite efforts from the SF police union to halt its enactment. The policy aims to address racial harassment and reduce the disproportionate stopping and searching of Black drivers in the city. Brian Cox, an attorney managing the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office Integrity Unit, highlighted that numerous studies have shown Black drivers are disproportionately targeted in California and nationwide. This policy is seen as a significant step towards ending racial harassment on San Francisco streets.
