10-Year-Old Japanese Boy Fatally Stabbed in Shenzhen, Heightening Tensions
Sep 19, 2024, 12:14 AM
A 10-year-old Japanese boy was fatally stabbed on his way to school in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday morning, September 18, 2024. The boy, a student at a Japanese school in the southern Chinese city, was attacked by a 44-year-old man named Zhong, who has since been detained by Chinese authorities. The boy was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries. This incident marks the second knife attack involving Japanese nationals in China in recent months, following a similar attack in Suzhou. The attack coincided with the 93rd anniversary of the Mukden incident. The Japanese government has expressed serious concern, with Vice Foreign Minister Okano summoning the Chinese envoy to Japan. China's Foreign Ministry has stated that the case is under investigation and assured that measures will be taken to protect foreign nationals in the country. The attack has heightened anxiety within the Japanese community in China and is likely to strain Sino-Japanese relations further.
