Houston Rep. Shawn Thierry Joins GOP, Greg Abbott Responds
Aug 30, 2024, 02:50 PM
Texas State Representative Shawn Thierry has announced her decision to switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. Thierry, who represents Houston, cited her opposition to certain Democratic policies as a key reason for her decision, particularly those related to gender-affirming care for children. She lost her primary runoff earlier this year after facing backlash for supporting Republican-backed bills, including a ban on child gender modification and the READER Act. Thierry expressed that the Democratic Party has moved too far left and no longer aligns with her values on education and public safety. Her announcement was made at the Moms for Liberty conference in Washington, D.C., where she also expressed support for former President Donald Trump. A statement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott was also released regarding Thierry's party switch.
