'Harry Potter' Star Rupert Grint Ordered to Pay £1.8 Million in Back Taxes
Nov 30, 2024, 12:44 PM
Rupert Grint, 36, known for his role as Ron Weasley in the 'Harry Potter' films, has been ordered to pay £1.8 million in back taxes after losing a legal battle with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The dispute involved Grint's attempt to reduce his tax liability by treating £4.5 million in earnings from 2011 as capital rather than income, which would be subject to a lower tax rate. HMRC launched an investigation into his 2011-2012 tax return in 2019, challenging this treatment. A tribunal ruled in favor of the tax authorities, ordering Grint to pay the outstanding amount, equivalent to $2.3 million or €2.1 million.
