Ofcom Rules Against GB News Over Rishi Sunak Forum in February, Considers Sanctions
May 20, 2024, 09:40 AM
Ofcom has ruled against GB News for breaching due impartiality rules during a 'People's Forum' featuring Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The forum, which allowed Sunak to be questioned by viewers, was found to provide an uncontested platform for the Prime Minister to promote his policies and performance. Ofcom described this as a 'serious and repeated breach' of broadcasting rules. The event took place in February and included 15 questions. The regulator is now starting the process for consideration of a statutory sanction against GB News, which could include a fine. Ofcom has 60 days to consider the sanction. GB News has responded by criticizing the ruling, stating they will continue to fight to be the 'voice of the people.'
