Nvidia Criticizes Biden's 'AI Diffusion' Export Rule as Threatening US AI Leadership
Jan 13, 2025, 12:01 PM
The Biden Administration has announced new regulations to limit the export of advanced AI chips, particularly those produced by Nvidia, in an effort to curb China's access to artificial intelligence technology. The new 'AI Diffusion' rule imposes quotas on the number of AI chips that can be exported to about 120 countries, while exempting 18 key allies and partners, including Japan, Britain, and the Netherlands. Nvidia has publicly criticized the regulations, stating that they threaten to derail innovation, undermine America's leadership in AI, and stifle economic growth worldwide. Nvidia's Vice President of Government Affairs, Ned Finkle, called the rule an 'unprecedented and misguided' '200+ page regulatory morass' that was 'drafted in secret and without proper legislative review.' The regulations also authorize some companies, likely cloud giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, to receive unlimited quantities of AI chips to build data centers. The new regulations are expected to enter a 120-day consultation period, with the incoming Trump Administration deciding how or whether to implement them.
