Gov. Whitmer Declines Sides as Michigan AG Nessel and Rep. Tlaib Clash Over Antisemitism and Protester Charges
Sep 22, 2024, 02:40 PM
A growing divide has emerged between Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Representative Rashida Tlaib, both Democrats, over issues related to antisemitism and the prosecution of protesters. Nessel has been vocal against Tlaib's alleged antisemitism and has faced criticism from Tlaib for charging protesters who attacked police at an anti-Israel encampment. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declined to take sides in the dispute. In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, Whitmer avoided addressing whether Tlaib's comments about Nessel were antisemitic, stating she would not get involved in the argument. Tlaib has accused Nessel of charging demonstrators due to her Jewish background, a claim Nessel has denied. The charges involved nearly a dozen individuals from the University of Michigan, with some labeled as pro-Hamas.
