Study Finds Plastic Chemicals in 86% of 312 Bay Area Foods, Boba Guys' Black Teal Pearls Exceed BPA Limit
Dec 27, 2024, 11:00 PM
A recent study conducted by a San Francisco-based team tested 312 packaged foods and drinks for plastic chemicals, revealing that 86% of the items contained such contaminants. The research, part of the PlasticList initiative led by Nat Friedman, found that phthalates were present in 73% of the tested products, while bisphenols were detected in 22%. Alarmingly, 13% of the foods tested exceeded the FDA and EFSA's established safety limits for these chemicals. Notably, Boba Guys' Black Teal Pearls contained 32,571% of the daily limit for bisphenol A (BPA). The study highlights the pervasive issue of plastic contamination in the food supply, with implications for public health given the potential links to hormone disruption and developmental issues.
