IDF Confirms Death of 21-Year-Old Long Island Native Capt. Omer Neutra; Body Held by Hamas
Dec 2, 2024, 12:51 PM
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that Captain Omer Maxim Neutra, a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier from Long Island, was killed during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Neutra, an avid Knicks fan who deferred his enrollment at SUNY Binghamton to serve in the IDF, was a lone soldier serving as a tank platoon commander in the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion. He was killed when his tank was disabled and ambushed near the Gaza border, and his body was abducted and remains held hostage in Gaza by Hamas. US President Joe Biden expressed devastation and outrage upon learning of Neutra's death, stating that Hamas has been holding his body since killing him during the attack. Neutra's parents, Ronen and Orna, campaigned tirelessly for over 14 months, hoping for their son's safe return. The confirmation of his death has prompted condolences from US politicians, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Rick Scott, who have pledged to continue efforts to bring his remains home. The IDF's announcement comes as over 100 hostages, including several American citizens, are still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli government has vowed to secure the return of all hostages and bring Neutra's body home for burial.
