DOJ Considers Historic Breakup of Google in Antitrust Monopoly Case
Oct 9, 2024, 06:03 AM
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering recommending a historic breakup of Google as a remedy in its antitrust case. The DOJ has proposed that Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., be forced to sell off parts of its operations to address the harm caused by its monopolization of the online search market. This potential breakup follows a ruling by Judge Amit Mehta, who found that Google maintained an illegal monopoly through exclusive agreements with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and browsers. The DOJ's proposed remedies also include making Google share its search data and limit its use of certain products. A 32-page document lays out the framework of potential options, with final witness lists to be filed by December 20, and a decision expected by August 25.
