Brazil Lifts X Ban; Calls for Alexandre de Moraes' Impeachment
Sep 18, 2024, 12:57 PM
Brazil's Supreme Court recently banned the social media platform X, affecting its 22 million users. Users who accessed the platform via VPNs risked fines of up to 50,000 reais per day. Despite the ban, prominent right-wing politicians continued to post, arguing it was a matter of free speech. The platform's ban left Brazil with a debt of 18 million reais. However, reports indicate that X is now accessible again in Brazil without VPNs, although there has been no official confirmation from the courts. The return of X is attributed to instability in the blocking mechanism. Brazil remains the 6th-largest market for X, with 25 million users. Calls for the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes have emerged, citing threats to democracy. The ban lasted 18 days, and the STF has not made any announcements regarding the platform's return.
