SpaceX and T-Mobile have received emergency special temporary authority from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enable Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability, providing coverage for cell phones in areas affected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The satellites have already been enabled, allowing people to send texts from their cell phones even without a traditional network. Since Saturday, SpaceX and T-Mobile have been providing wireless coverage via Starlink Direct to Cell satellites to the affected areas. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that Starlink is the only reason they can connect with their convoy, emphasizing that Starlink is saving lives through its critical role in emergency response efforts during the hurricane.
