US Study Finds HIV-Positive Kidney Transplants Safe and Effective
Oct 17, 2024, 02:08 PM
A recent US study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has shown that kidney transplantation from donors with HIV to recipients with HIV is safe and effective. The study, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), found that the outcomes of such transplants were comparable to those from donors without HIV. The research was led by the HOPE in Action investigators, including Dorry Segev and Rachel Friedman-Monaco from Emory Medicine, and involved Hopkins Medicine. This finding is expected to change policies regarding organ transplantation for HIV-positive individuals.
