Paris Olympics Opening Day Marred by Arson Attacks, Disrupting Travel for 800,000
Jul 26, 2024, 08:15 AM
On the opening day of the Paris Olympics, France's high-speed rail network was severely disrupted by coordinated acts of sabotage, including arson attacks. The state-owned railway operator SNCF reported that the attacks targeted installations along TGV lines connecting Paris with the country's west, north, and east. These malicious acts have led to significant delays and cancellations of Eurostar services between London and Paris, with journey times extended by up to 90 minutes. Damage to signalling near Arras has also been reported. French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete condemned the attacks, which are expected to affect around 800,000 travelers and disrupt traffic until the weekend.
