Palisades Fire Prompts 30,000 Evacuations in Southern California Amid Santa Ana Winds, Governor Newsom Declares Emergency
Jan 8, 2025, 06:49 AM
Wildfires have ravaged Southern California, particularly in the Los Angeles area, with the Palisades Fire causing significant destruction. The fire, which started in the Pacific Palisades, has led to the evacuation of 30,000 residents and has destroyed numerous structures. The blaze was exacerbated by extreme Santa Ana winds, which were forecasted to be the strongest in over a decade and described as life-threatening. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as the fire spread rapidly, fueled by the winds. The Palisades Fire has been reported to have consumed nearly 2 square miles of land, with flames visible across the city, including from Venice Beach. The fire has also affected the grounds of the Getty Villa, though the museum and its collection remain safe. Evacuation efforts have been complicated by blocked roads, leading some residents to abandon their vehicles and flee on foot. The fire has also prompted the closure of sections of major highways to aid in evacuation. As a result of the strong winds, 28,300 households were left without power, and 15,000 utility customers had their power shut off to reduce the risk of equipment sparking additional blazes, with over 13,000 structures under threat.
