VisitToyota, Mazda, Yamaha Suspend Six Models Amid Vehicle Certification Scandal
Jun 3, 2024, 07:38 AM
Toyota and four other Japanese automakers have been found to commit irregularities in vehicle certification processes, according to Japan's transport ministry. A government investigation revealed that Toyota falsified data and skirted impact-safety tests while applying to certify seven past and current vehicles. The investigation, still in progress, identified affected models including variants of the Corolla, Axio, and Yaris. Additionally, Toyota submitted faulty data during pedestrian-safety tests for three current models. In response, the transport ministry plans to search Toyota's head office. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi expressed deep regret over the series of irregularities. Toyota, Mazda, and Yamaha have suspended six models following the findings. Toyota submitted about 7,000 certification reports over 10 years, certifying about 50 models per year. Honda's data falsification affected 3.2 million vehicles.
