MLB and MLBPA Amend CBA to Support Teams Losing TV Revenue with Up to $15 Million
Jul 25, 2024, 02:12 AM
Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) have reached an agreement to amend the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to support teams losing television revenue. The agreement allows for the redirection of Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) money, with up to $15 million per affected club, to subsidize the lost revenue. This decision comes amid the ongoing regional sports network (RSN) crisis and the bankruptcy of Diamond Sports. Deputy Commissioner Noah Garden acknowledged the challenges faced by RSNs but noted the momentum in ratings. The MLBPA believes that this change will help teams spend more on players. Additionally, MLB is exploring potential direct-to-consumer (DTC) options.
