SS United States to Become Largest Artificial Reef Off Okaloosa County Coast on September 16th
Aug 31, 2024, 06:31 PM
The SS United States, one of the last remaining ocean liners and known for holding the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, is set to become the largest artificial reef in the world. Okaloosa County, Florida, has signed an agreement to purchase the historic ship. Local leaders are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss whether the ship should be sunk off their coast as part of the artificial reef project. The plan involves towing the SS United States to the Gulf of Mexico, where it will be sunk using explosive charges on September 16th.
