Assam Police Arrest Dhing Rape Accused on Friday, New Aadhaar Applicants Must Submit NRC Receipt
Sep 7, 2024, 11:23 AM
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Police have arrested both absconding accused in the Dhing rape incident. The arrests on Friday come after the August 22 gang rape case that triggered a backlash against Bengali Muslims in the eastern part of the state. Additionally, Sarma stated that new applicants for Aadhaar cards in Assam will now need to submit their NRC application receipt number. This measure aims to curb the influx of illegal foreigners, as it was discovered that four districts have more Aadhaar card holders than their projected populations. The Assam government plans to intensify the process of identifying illegal foreigners, having already arrested or pushed back 20-30 Bangladeshis in recent months.
