Michigan's Former GOP Rep. Fred Upton Endorses Harris, Calls Trump 'Unfit to Serve'
Oct 24, 2024, 01:45 PM
Former Republican Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her 2024 presidential bid, marking the first time he has voted for a Democrat for president. Upton, who retired in 2022 after serving 36 years in Congress, was one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump. In his endorsement, Upton criticized Trump as 'totally unhinged' and 'divisive,' stating that Trump 'has not changed his colors' and remains 'unfit to serve as commander in chief again.' Upton said he has 'already cast [his] ballot for Kamala Harris,' adding, 'It's the right thing to do.' He expressed a desire to 'move forward,' saying, 'We don't need this chaos.' Upton cited his presence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, where he 'witnessed first-hand the violence trying to co-opt the legitimate counting of each state's electoral votes.' He joins more than 30 former Republican members of Congress who publicly refuse to support Trump. Upton's support for Harris is seen as an effort to appeal to moderate Republicans in Michigan, a key battleground state.
