Climate Activists Disrupt Cologne-Bonn, Frankfurt, and Heathrow Airports, Causing Flight Cancellations
Jul 25, 2024, 04:54 AM
Climate activists have caused significant disruptions at major European airports, including Cologne-Bonn and Frankfurt, as part of a coordinated campaign demanding an end to fossil fuels by 2030. On Wednesday morning, activists at Cologne-Bonn Airport in Germany cut through fencing and glued themselves to the runway, leading to the suspension of flights for several hours and causing severe delays and cancellations. Similarly, Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, temporarily halted flights after protesters infiltrated the airport grounds and glued themselves to the tarmac, resulting in the cancellation of over 100 flights and the diversion of more than 50 flights. The protests, led by groups like Last Generation and Just Stop Oil, are part of a broader Europe-wide campaign. Nine activists, known as the Heathrow 7, were arrested at Heathrow Airport in London for conspiring to disrupt operations. Authorities have arrested several activists, and operations have resumed at the affected airports.
