VisitMagnitude 7.2 Earthquake Hits Atiquipa, Peru; GFZ Revises to 6.9, Tsunami Warning Lifted
Jun 28, 2024, 06:23 AM
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near the coast of Peru early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which hit 8km west of Atiquipa at a depth of 28km, prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center initially indicated that tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 meters above the tide level were possible along some coasts of Peru. However, the tsunami warning was later lifted, and no significant tsunami threat remains. The earthquake was felt as far as the capital, Lima, approximately 600 miles away. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 6.4 before revising it to 6.9.
