Six-Day Funeral Observances Begin in Georgia for Former President Jimmy Carter, Dead at 100
Jan 4, 2025, 06:34 PM
Six days of funeral observances for former President Jimmy Carter began on Saturday in Georgia, following his death on December 29 at the age of 100. Former Secret Service agents who protected Carter served as pallbearers, transferring his flag-draped casket from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. The casket departed from Plains, Carter's hometown, and passed by his boyhood home where a farm bell rang 39 times in his honor, and the National Park Service rendered a salute. The motorcade proceeded to Atlanta, with a stop at the Georgia State Capitol for a moment of silence. Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center, allowing the public to pay their respects before ceremonies move to Washington, D.C. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, on January 9 in Plains.
