Delhi HC to Hear Plea on Rajinder Nagar Coaching Centre Deaths, Criticizes Authorities
Jul 31, 2024, 07:04 AM
The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear a plea on July 31 seeking the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the deaths of three civil service aspirants at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. The aspirants drowned in the basement of the center due to flooding caused by an SUV speeding past, which led to water gushing through the gates. The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Delhi government, city police chief, and Municipal Commissioner in connection with the incident. The court has criticized the authorities for allowing multi-story buildings without proper drainage and has directed the removal of all encroachments on drains in the area by Friday. The court also questioned the arrest of the SUV driver and criticized the suspension of only junior officers while senior officers remain unaffected. The Delhi government's 'freebie culture' was also condemned by the court, which suggested that such tragedies are inevitable without proper tax collection and infrastructure maintenance. In total, seven people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
