U.S. Sanctions Sudan's RSF Leader Hemedti and UAE-Based Companies Over Genocide in Darfur
Jan 7, 2025, 04:00 PM
The United States has imposed sanctions on Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Mousa, known as Hemedti, the leader of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and seven UAE-based companies linked to the RSF's financial and military support networks. This action follows a determination by Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the RSF has committed genocide in Sudan's Darfur region. The sanctions, announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, target Hemedti for his role in leading the RSF, which has been involved in a brutal conflict with Sudan's military, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of 12 million people. The RSF's actions have included ethnically motivated killings, widespread sexual violence, and the use of humanitarian aid denial as a weapon of war, alongside previous determinations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.
